Change Up The Tee

It always seems trickier to sew for boys for some reason.  It seems that there is less variety in the designs and options out there.  For the third theme of the Sewing Blue Blog Tour, we had the interesting challenge of getting creative to change a simple tee into something special.  We all started out with the fun Primary Tee by GYCT, which is a fun staple for any wardrobe, and tried to Change Up The Tee!

It has been incredibly hot here the last few days, so I decided to leave out the sleeves and make little man a fun tank for the summer.  He recently discovered the Wii, so I couldn’t pass up the chance to use this fun Mario fabric from 42 Custom Fabric.  I used the panel for the front and the coordinating fabric for the back.  For the arm bands, I measured the arm opening and multiplied by 85%.  The result was amazing!  He loved it!

Something fun that I like to do with tops is color blocking.  Little man had been asking me for a rainbow shirt, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to use the rainbow stars and Dinosaurs in Space CL I had gotten from the all dino round at 42 Custom Fabric.   I measured about an inch and a half below the arm sycle of the front piece and cut a straight line.  I then added a half inch to each piece to account for the seam allowance.  I then did the same for the back piece.  Another big hit!

Of course, sometimes just a plain tee in a yummy fabric is just perfect!  I used some navy micro viscose cotton from So Sew English to make little man a shirt that he could wear just about any day!

  1. I love the way you “changed up the tee”! Smart thinking making a tank top. And he looks sincerely happy that you made it for him!
